Sexting=Sex Offender

Friday, August 22nd, 2008

The act of “sexting” or sending explicit photos or erotic messages over a cell phone could lead to serious trouble for teenagers. Since most teenagers text each other with inappropriate pictures, their is a high likely hood that their friend is a minor. Most states prohibit the distribution of pornography involving minors. Recently, prosecutors have started charging teenagers with sex crimes for sharing nude pictures through their cell phones.

A Des Monies, Iowa teen became very close to being charged with a sex crime this week when he text pictures of himself and his girlfriend being involved in a sexual act to his 17 year old friend. Prosecutors decided not to go for the sex crime and had the teen to plead guilty to a lesser crime. If convicted he would have served 2 years in jail and 10 years on the state’s sexual offender registry.

Queensland teenagers have taken sexual experimentation to the cyber world, with an explosion in the number of youngsters taking and distributing nude pictures of themselves via mobile phones.

The phenomenon, dubbed “sexting”, may be cause for alarm among parents, teachers and authorities concerned over the perils of child pornography, however academics say the trend is a “normal” part of growing up in the 21st century.

“Teenagers are simply exploring their sexuality and they are using technology because they can,” Queensland University of Technology Senior Lecturer of Psychology Dr Marilyn Campbell said.

The full extent of sexting has not been quantified, but a recent survey by a teenage girls’ magazine Girlfriend found 40 per cent of respondents had been asked to send sexual images of themselves to schoolfriends, boyfriends, girlfriends or potential suitors. (more…)

TAHLEQUAH DAILY PRESS -

Many families preserve history through photos. Often, a trip to grandma’s would seem incomplete without a trip down memory lane via the big book of pictures.

These days, electronic media dominates everything from the way we listen to music, communicate and save images. Almost every cell phone has a built-in camera, which has some parents concerned - for good reason.

According to a recent report by the Associated Press, more and more teens are taking inappropriate photos of themselves, often wearing little or no clothing, and sending them to prospective boyfriends or girlfriends. More worrisome, these photos, once on the Internet, are accessible to practically anyone.

And it’s not just troubled inner-city teens doing the dirty downloads.

Alana Scott, a 2006 graduate of Tahlequah High School and an honors psychology student at Northeastern State University, shed harsh light on the teen cell-cam nudie photo rage. (more…)

Sexting will Cell Phones

Saturday, May 17th, 2008

Every parent needs to be familiar with the new term “sexting.” Sexting is when teenagers send nude pictures or sexual explicit messages to each other by using their cell phone.  Sexting is the main way for teens to circumvent rejection from their peers. Sexual interests can be communicated to the other party without having to deal with face to face rejection. Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick demonstrates the phenomenom of sexting:

The problem for parents is that sexting usually lead to sexual encounters. Teens gauge interests from each other through the explicit pictures and determine whether or not to meet in person to have sex. In order to conrol sexting, parents need to inform their teenagers that sending nude picutres is considered porn and against federal law. Parents can also purchase software from Spyparent.net to monitor their teens emails, tests, and instant messages.

Teenage Sex\Party Lines and Assault

Sunday, May 4th, 2008

Local Telephone Sex Lines and Party Lines have become the number 1 way for teenagers in rural areas to socialize.  Rural teenagers are less likely to have computers which lead to socialization through telephone chat lines. Teen conversations range from day to day activities to up and coming parties. The problem is that teenage girls from the ages of 12-16 are meeting up with older men and engaging sexual activity.  In rural areas outside of Chicago and Miami, teenagers have recently been murdered or sexually assaulted by older men who met and coerced them through the chat lines.

Law enforcement has concentrated their efforts on stopping the type of internet crimes made popular by NBC’s “Catch a Predator”. Little efforts have been directed towards telephone chat lines.  Telephone chat lines do not leave a transcript like a computer which makes prosecution difficult. Since most of the party lines are local numbers, telephone providers can not block access like your normal 900 or 916 #s used for adult sex lines. Parents are having a hard time monitoring party lines due to teenager believing they are actually in love with the older men.

Here is an example of the problems:

SpyParent. Net has a list of some helpful strategies for parents who teenagers may be engaging in Sex Lines or Party Lines:

  • 1. Remove long distance service from your land line in the home. Restrict all long distance calls to your personal cell phone.
  • 2. If you do not feel comfortable shutting down the long distance, then monitor your monthly bill on a regular bases to detect any type of suspicious pattern.
  • 3. Have a conversation with your teenager and explain to them the dangers of chatting and instruct them to never give out personal information under any circumstance.
  • 4. Track the phone numbers on your caller ID. If your teenager is talking to a predator, then these numbers will be vital to law enforcement.
  • 5. Invest in a digital telephone recorder to monitor your teenager’s conversations. You can plug the recorder in any room and record conversation to play back at your connivance. You can purchase a digital telephone recorder from spyparent.net.
