Big Brother is Watching. China and Green Dam

Monday, July 13th, 2009

CB050932The Chinese government mandated that all PC makers include the Green Dam filtering software on all new retail PCs. Giants such as Dell would have to include the software on all of their new PCs in order for them to be exported into China for retail.
Chinese officials stated that the new software is to prevent teenagers and young children from entering pornographic sites or other unwanted sites. Critics argue that China is mandating the software to control the population’s source of news information. The Chinese officials could use Green Dam to prevent citizens from going on sites that are anti the Chinese government. The rumor is that the software will shut down computers if the user types anti government terms in the search engine.
California software company Solid Oaks has brought a lawsuit claiming that Green Dam stole code from Cybersitters. They are also claiming that Green Dam copies their black list which contains the list of blocked sites. Solid Oak has issued and ceast and desist letter to PC manufactures.

Spy Parent, LLC is a long time partner of Solid Oak and support their efforts to protect their intellectual rights.
